Melissa Hastings is Spencer Hastings seemingly perfect older sister. Melissa has everything her sister ever wanted. She just got accepted to the Wharton School of Business, with nothing but praises from their parents and was engaged to Wren Kim. What she doesn't already have, she's not afraid to take. The thing is, what she has, seems to be attractive to her sister --namely her perfect fiancé. Wren kissed Spencer one night when Wren stopped by at Spencers room. However, Melissa saw them from a mirror's reflection resulting in Melissa breaking up with Wren, changing her parents' opinion on Spencer and hating her sister, but this is not a one time experience.
A year ago Melissa dated Ian Thomas, a boy whom Spencer kissed while dating Melissa, but she never knew found out. Later in the show Ian Thomas returns to Rosewood. Spencer trying to mend her relationship with Melissa and hooked them up together for coffee. She reunites with Ian again after this and the two start dating. Also Melissa said made peace with her sister, making them closer than ever. This bond was evident when Melissa comforted Spencer the time Hanna was confined in the hospital after getting hit by a car. In the winter premiere episode, she and Ian elope.
